Chronicle of Important Exchanges between Anhui and Maryland

In September 1979, Wan Li, first Secretary of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee, led an Anhui delegation to the United States. That visit was the first provincial delegation from China to the United States after the normalization of Sino-US relations. Secretary Wan Li and Maryland Governor Harry Hughes reached a consensus on the establishment of sister-state relationship during the visit.

In June 1980, Governor Hughes led a delegation to Anhui. The two sides signed the agreement on the establishment of sister-state relationship between Anhui and Maryland.

In October 1985, Governor Wang Yuzhao attended the celebration of the 5th Anniversary of  Maryland-Anhui Sister State Relationship.

In November 1993, Governor Fu Xishou led a delegation to Maryland. The two sides signed the agreement on further strengthening the friendly relationship between Anhui and Maryland.

In November 1995, Lu Rongjing, Secretary of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee, led a delegation to attend the celebration of the 15th Anniversary of Maryland-Anhui Sister State Relationship. In addition, the two sides signed the joint statement on furthering exchanges and cooperation between Anhui and Maryland.

In June 1997, Governor Hughes led a delegation to Anhui and signed a summary of the meeting on strengthening economic cooperation and friendly exchanges.

In May 2004, Wang Taihua, Secretary of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee, led a delegation to Maryland and signed the memorandum of understanding on further strengthening friendly cooperation between Maryland and Anhui.

In September 2010, Maryland Secretary of State John MacDonald led a delegation to Anhui to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Maryland-Anhui Sister State Relationship, and witnessed the tree of friendship being planted as part of the ceremony.

In June 2011, Governor Martin O'Malley visited China. Anhui and Maryland jointly held a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Maryland-Anhui Sister State Relationship in Beijing.

In June 2015, Maryland Secretary of State John Wobensmith visited Anhui; in October the same year, Liu Weidong, Deputy Secretary-general of Anhui Provincial Government, led a delegation to Maryland and attended the celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Maryland-Anhui Sister State Relationship.

In June 2017, Li Jinbin, Secretary of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee, led Anhui economic and friendly delegation to Maryland and signed with Governor Larry Hogan the Memorandum on Strengthening Strategic Cooperation between Maryland and Anhui.

In May 2018, Vice Governor Zhou Xi'an led Anhui economic delegation to Maryland. The two sides jointly held Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week.

In September 2019, Earl Lewis, Deputy Secretary of Maryland Department of Transportation visited Anhui and attended the World Manufacturing Convention 2019 and other relevant forums. In October, Maryland Secretary of State John Wobensmith, Deputy Secretary of Maryland Department of Agriculture Julianne Oberg, and Maryland Horse Industry Board representatives visited Anhui and attended the opening ceremony of China ·Dangshan International Equestrian Endurance Race.

In February 2020, Maryland donated medical supplies to Anhui to help with COVID-19 prevention work; In April, Anhui donated medical supplies to Maryland to support its fight against COVID-19. Governor Hogan and Secretary Wobensmith sent letters of thanks. In May, Anhui and Maryland jointly held a video conference on COVID-19 between medical experts.

In February 2021, Anhui and Maryland jointly held an online event in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Maryland-Anhui Sister State Relationship.
